I got the chance to check out Barney’s Version at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival. Here’s my review that appeared on Dose.ca’s TIFF Blog.

***

Cast: Paul Giamatti, Dustin Hoffman, Scott Speedman, Rachelle Lefevre, Minnie Driver, Rosamund Pike

Kinda Like: The life story of that one uncle who seems unhinged but is actually pretty cool once you get to know him.

The Deal: Based on Mordecai Richler’s novel, the movie tells the story of Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) and hisversion of events which include the strange disappearance of his best friend (Scott Speedman) and his three marriages – although the

primary focus on the pursuit of his third wife (played by Rosamund Pike). Not only does Giamatti do justice by portraying Barney’s comedic charm (alongside Dustin Hoffman and Minnie Driver) but also manages to break your heart during Barney’s personal tragedies.

Montreal’s presence is not only felt through the backdrop, but by the characters cheering on the Habs, the mention of Reuben (from the deli) and the music of Leonard Cohen.
Rating: 5/5
